Creating Pro Arte x Ohn Mar Win Brushes

For over 50 years we've developed and honed down the skills of brush making at our factory here in the north of England. The balance of crafting brushes and working with artists is ever important to ensure that every brush fits its purpose, and as such, we've collaborated with renowned watercolour artist Ohn Mar Win to produce a bespoke collection of paintbrushes perfect for her expressive and washy style

Gaining popularity through expressive watercolour still life paintings, Ohn Mar's drive and hands-on approach meant that she could build courses and detailed lessons that target how artists can overcome challenges and build on their creativity with confidence.

A nice goal of Ohn Mar's was not only to find the perfect brushes for her style, but work on a range that could be readily available for all of those who wanted to work with watercolour paints in the same expressive and loose style. Because of this, Ohn Mar's completely bespoke collection of brushes were born.

Ohn Mar Win and her story

Ohn Mar’s discovery of watercolours started around 10 years ago after she received a small sketchbook for her birthday. Although starting off messy, her determination and drive meant that Ohn Mar practiced on every day items all around her- from marmite jars to fruits and veg. This humble beginning grew into confidence with watercolour painting and allowed Ohn Mar to find a career in food illustration.

But Ohn Mar’s passion didn’t stop there, she pulls inspiration from a huge array of subjects whether it’s urban landscapes or floral settings. This has paved the way for a growing social media presence and in depth classes that teach others her craft. Ohn Mar’s approach to teaching watercolours is genuine and authentic, having been through her audience’s struggles. As a result, her courses focus on practical and hands-on approaches that help students explore their creativity through experimentation and growing confidence.

Developing paintbrushes for Ohn Mar

Ohn Mar’s unmistakable loose and expressive art style sees large watercolour washes surrounding fine pinpoint accurate details whether it’s still life portraying every intimate feature or quick sketches capturing a scene in time. This variety requires versatility, and quill brushes are perfect for this mix of strokes! By combining a specific mix of natural and synthetic hairs in a traditionally tied ferrule, quill brushes are able to absorb and carry a large amount of colour while still maintaining a spring and point. This means that with one brush, wide washes and fine pointed details are all possible. A must for Ohn Mar’s artwork

Hair mixing and making bespoke heads

As a traditional brush, Quill brushes are one of the most hands-on paintbrushes to manufacture. The mix of natural and synthetic hair make them very difficult to machine mix and so need to be layered by hand. Our skilled brush makers will layer and mix the hair until they feel it’s properly textured.

Once mixed, our head maker will pick the right amount of hair for the size of the ferrule. This then needs to be tied and hand dipped into glue in order to secure the fibres in place. The string is then removed to allow the head to be secured to the handle in its finished form.

Finally, a pre-rounded ferrule is wrapped around the head and handle and tied by hand using a copper wire. This needs to be tight enough to secure the head properly but not too tight as to restrict its colour holding ability

Handle art and printing

With each new brush range comes a new handle print. Ohn Mar’s brush collection displays the collaboration between Pro Arte and Ohn Mar, the brush type and size. To create the new design, the artwork is printed onto a photopositive film before a strong UV light is used against a plate to soften the area below the text. Our team then remove the softened area to create an etched plate which sits the text underneath its surface. This allows ink to pool in this area and be transferred onto the handle.

During printing, our pad printing machine moves a rubber pad vertically. By doing this, the rubber collects the pool of ink on its first drop, and on the second drop, stamps the text onto a plain handle that has been placed by our brush maker.

Finishing the heads

Once the heads have been made, they need to be properly shaped and prepped ready for both transport and the artist the use. To do this, the hair is carefully treated by using boiling water and shaped by our team. This ensures that the point is as sharp as possible and returns to its shape once used. We then use a gum Arabic to fix the shape in place- this, along with a small plastic cap, ensures that the delicate fibres remain intact during shipping

Once you have your brushes, gently remove the gum by breaking it up with your fingers. You’ll need to do this quite a lot with mop brushes as their absorbent mature will hold a lot of the Gum!

Journal design and custom sleeve

We first created our Journal to highlight our incredible team here at Pro Arte and showcase our complex and hands on manufacturing approach to making artist brushes. Alongside this we featured artists that we’ve worked with for product testing, photoshoots and more, but as a part of a product collaboration we saw the perfect opportunity to delve into artist insights and their brushes!

During this highlight, we’ve explored Ohn Mar’s insightful stories throughout her time as an artist- from starting out, to turning professional and even delving into the courses that she runs.

As with all our new artist collaborations, we’ve developed a packaging design that is changing the way that our brushes are stored and sent. Although we’re only a small family business, we are constantly hunting more environmentally friendly practices, and not only does carded packaging make for a more creative sleeve design but also means that they can be recycled!

Hopefully this blog gives you a nice idea of the hands-on manufacturing process behind Ohn Mar Win’s brushes and how they’re made in our British Factory. It’s an honour to be able to create the perfect brush for Ohn Mar’s watercolour painting style and help so many others explore her range.
