“I’ve been using Pro Arte brushes for over 10 years, the quality is great! I had previously been using sable brushes, but they were just too soft to handle the thicker consistency of gouache and found that synthetics they handle gouache so well, and I love the shape and consistency of the bristles. They are really responsive, which means they are great for creating both delicate details and soft expressive brush strokes. As a mixed media artist that moves between watercolours, gouache, liquid watercolours, and Artgraf, having a versatile brush just makes life easier.
I decided on the makeup of my set to include my favourite round brushes as well as an angled shader and filbert. Round brushes are a great everyday brush, and as I tend to work quite small, I’ve included some smaller sizes that are great for small details. As it’s so versatile, it can be used for creating small details and for large expressive brush marks. It might look small, but the fullness of the bristles means it can hold a lot of paint and create some really beautiful brushstrokes.
I love using a filbert brush. I find it such a great way to loosen up as an artist. Holding the brush very upright and using its edge can be a great way of creating expressive, organic line work, which is great when painting things like tree branches. I love the soft rounded washes that can be created using the flat of the brush. Perfect for painting clouds, skies, rolling hills, or just filling in big areas. And as for the angled shader, I love using this when I’m painting something with a lot of straight lines, like buildings, but it’s also great for handling thicker consistencies of gouache and creating a dry texture.
I think this set is perfect for anybody who is new to gouache, or is looking for a versatile set that works across different types of paint.”
